  • The development area is around 21.8 hectares (ha) in size, with the inner operational boundary around 12.2 ha in size. The fuel store area comprises around 6 ha and the main power plant building comprises around 2.2 ha. Approximately 9.7 ha are being dedicated as landscape and development areas.
  • A large landscaped area up to 6 m high will also be created between the Plant and nearest housing at Sandfields. The area will comprise of an earth bund of 3 m in height and planting up to a further 3 m in height. The bund will provide a visual and acoustic screen, an area of valuable ecological mitigation, and assist in preventing wind blown material from leaving the site.

  • Exhaust steam from a single 350MWe steam turbine will be condensed by means of a dry air cooled condenser and will therefore require no water for cooling purposes.

  • The flue gasses will pass through a fabric filter to remove 99.99% of the entrained dust. There will be no need for sulphur or chlorine control as the wood fuel does not contain significant quantities of these components.

  • The wood will have minimal ash content, producing less than 80,000 tonnes of ash per year.

  • Renewable electricity generated will be exported via a new underground electrical line.

  • The development represents an investment of approximately £400 million. The investment will lead to generation of new opportunities for local employment and the demand for locally sourced goods and services.

  • The height of the tallest building within the development will be 65 metres.

  • The height of the chimney will be 100 metres.

  • Construction of the Renewable Energy Plant is expected to commence in the second quarter of 2008 and last around 32 months, with full operation in the first quarter of 2011.
